When I first heard the statement of this article's title, I had no idea why my math teacher was saying that and could not even get close to understanding it until the last decade.
Recently Zuckerberg announced that most of his products will converge into a single metaverse. But if we realize, in fact, many people already live in metaverses for quite a while. If they don't have social media accounts or don't post what they are doing in their lives every single day, a feeling of being out of "this" world arises. Games (not just electronic ones) are also a piece of what we have always done in order to get ourselves in another world.
We were only missing some pieces to get it all glued together and deepen the roots of being metaverse. One of the most essential pieces that were missing to build the great foundation for metaverses was the recent development and enhancements in the cryptography universe that made possible blockchains and therefore to define unique value for digital assets.
Internet of things + big data + artificial intelligence + crypto + metaverses + 5g + web 3.0 + VR may result in what the movie Matrix wanted to show us, but without the gaudy elements of that movie. Whoever surfs in this blend will probably have a chance to be even richer than those who invested in the internet back in the 90s. Our lives are in the process of being digitalized since the very first microchip and there is no way back. One may say that this process will face some rocks on the road, but drawbacks can get fixed or lightened.
Music, games, movies, and arts, in general, all were digitalized. The main drawback was piracy. Piracy was circumvented with copyright regulations, easier and cheaper access to content directly through the web. The same thing will probably happen with the downsides (anxiety?) of our lives being metaverse. Metaverse won't stop at all, and it is just in its early days. There may be some threats on the way, like if our power grid gets impaired in some way or other forces of nature that are stronger than we decide it is enough. We are creating whole new universes purely based on mathematics.
