Windows 95: A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

Windows 95: A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

Windows 95: A Nostalgic Trip Down Memory Lane

From the teal desktop background and the birth of the Start button to modern multi-core powerhouses—let's take a look at how personal computing has grown up.

#Windows95 #OperatingSystems #RetroTech #ComputingHistory

Introduction: What is Windows '95?

Windows '95 is an OPERATING SYSTEM—a set of programs that helps you organize and manage your computer resources, including hardware devices and installed software. Unlike older command-line systems like MS-DOS, Windows '95 introduced a revolutionary GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACE (GUI).

A GUI uses small pictures called ICONS to help you easily select and run programs. The core features that changed computing forever include:

  • Icons: Small screen pictures representing programs, files, and folders.
  • Windows: Screen areas activated when running a program or opening a file (resembling an actual window).
  • Drop-down menus: Fast, convenient lists of commands available within applications.
  • Mouse: A pointing device controlling a screen pointer, offering speed and ease that made navigation dramatically faster compared to typing text commands.

The classic Windows '95 desktop environment.

Setting up applications back in the floppy disk era.

Why Windows '95 Crushed MS-DOS

  1. Multi-Tasking: Running more than one program simultaneously in memory.
  2. Faster Command Execution: Streamlined graphical command issuing.
  3. Simplicity: Icons made file and folder management intuitive.
  4. Full RAM Utilization: Made complete use of the computer's Random Access Memory (RAM).
  5. Long Filenames: Expanded filename limits from old DOS 8.3 restrictions up to 256 characters (e.g., changing MYREP.TXT to MONTHLY REPORT.TXT).

Starting Up, Shutting Down & Navigation

Unlike MS-DOS where users had to wait for a prompt (e.g., typing WIN in older Windows 3.11 versions), Windows '95 loaded automatically upon boot. It introduced the iconic Taskbar and Start Button at the bottom of the screen.

The Essential Start Menu Options:

Option Purpose
ProgramsDisplays a list of launchable programs.
DocumentsDisplays recently opened documents.
SettingsAccess system components and the Control Panel.
FindLocate folders, files, mail, and messages.
HelpLaunch Windows built-in reference help topics.
RunStart a program or open a folder via command path.
Shut downSafely exit Windows or switch to MS-DOS mode.
Safe Shut Down Procedure: Always shut down Windows properly before switching off your computer to ensure files are saved and programs close safely. Go to Start > Shut Down > Shut down the computer > Yes, and wait for the message “It is now safe to turn off your computer”.

Managing Windows: Sizing, Moving & Multitasking

When running multiple programs, windows overlap. The window on top is the ACTIVE WINDOW, while the one behind is the INACTIVE WINDOW. You can switch between running programs instantly using taskbar buttons (much like changing channels on a TV).

Window Control Buttons (Top Right Corner)

  • Minimize Button (Leftmost): Reduces the window down to a button on the taskbar.
  • Maximize / Restore Button (Center): Expands the window to fill the entire screen, then toggles back to its original size when clicked again.
  • Close Button (Rightmost, 'X'): Quits the program or closes the window immediately.

You can also resize windows by dragging their borders (using a two-headed arrow cursor for edges or corners) or move them by clicking and dragging their title bars.

Floppy Disks & "My Computer"

Back in the day, managing files meant interacting directly with physical hardware like 1.44 MB floppy diskettes. Before use, new diskettes had to be formatted through My Computer by selecting drive A:, choosing options like Quick vs. Full format, entering volume labels, and optionally copying system startup files.

From Windows '95 to Windows 11: How Times Have Changed!

If Windows '95 was your introduction to computers back in the 90s, you've witnessed an incredible technological evolution:

  • Storage: We went from struggling to fit files onto 1.44 MB floppy disks to terabytes of lightning-fast NVMe SSDs and cloud storage.
  • Multitasking: Multitasking in '95 was a marvel that let you keep WordPad and Paint open side-by-side; today, Windows 11 handles complex multi-monitor workflows, AI assistants, and heavy gaming effortlessly.
  • Design: Chunky beige CRT monitors, pixelated icons, and bevelled gray windows have transformed into sleek, glassmorphic translucent UI designs, centered taskbars, and touchscreens.
Tech Trivia Check: If you were learning computers on Windows '95 when it launched, you've spent nearly three decades watching the digital world transform right before your eyes!

Happy Mazingira Day & Happy Customer Service Week!

Happy Mazingira Day & Happy Customer Service Week!

#MazingiraDay #CustomerServiceWeek #Kenya #Environment #TheExtraMile

As we wrap up a special week in early October, two meaningful celebrations have come together in a beautiful way: Mazingira Day and Customer Service Week.

Shared Message: Care. Responsibility. Going the extra mile — for customers, communities, and the environment.

Celebrating Our Environment – Happy Mazingira Day!

On 10 October, Kenya marks Mazingira Day — our national day dedicated to the environment. “Mazingira” is the Swahili word for environment, and the day reminds us that protecting our land, water, forests, and air is a shared responsibility.

This year’s focus is clear and powerful:

“Our Environment, Our Responsibility: Collective Action for Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.”

From community tree-planting drives to the national goal of growing 15 billion trees by 2032, Mazingira Day is more than a holiday. It is a call to action. Every seedling planted, every clean-up organized, and every conscious choice we make contributes to restoring ecosystems and building a greener, more resilient Kenya for future generations.

Whether you planted a tree, reduced plastic use, or simply shared an environmental message this week — thank you. Your small actions matter.

Honouring the People Who Serve – Happy Customer Service Week!

At the same time, Customer Service Week (5–9 October 2026) has been celebrated around the world under the theme “The Extra Mile.”

This week recognises the people who go above and beyond for others every day — customer service teams, frontline staff, support agents, and everyone who turns ordinary interactions into memorable experiences.

Great service is not only about solving problems. It is about listening with empathy, responding with care, and creating moments that leave people feeling valued. The same spirit of responsibility and collective action we celebrate on Mazingira Day is what makes excellent customer service possible.

Connecting the Two Celebrations

There is a quiet but powerful link between these two occasions.

Serving customers well and serving the environment well both require the same mindset:

Care. Responsibility. Going the extra mile.

When businesses and individuals treat customers with respect and treat the planet with the same respect, we create lasting value — for people and for the earth we all share.

A Simple Call to Action

As we move forward from this special week:

  • Keep planting — both trees and positive experiences.
  • Keep going the extra mile — for customers and for the planet.
  • Keep reminding ourselves that real progress happens when we act together.
Happy Mazingira Day!
Happy Customer Service Week!

May we continue to nurture both our communities and our environment with the same dedication and heart.

What did you do this Mazingira Day or Customer Service Week? Share your story in the comments — we’d love to hear how you went the extra mile! πŸŒ³πŸ’š

Toloka & Mindrift Task Guide: Website Classification with Practice Test

Toloka & Mindrift Task Guide: Website Classification & Practice Test

Toloka & Mindrift Task Guide: Website Classification with Practice Test

When working on web content evaluation tasks for annotation platforms like Toloka or Mindrift, consistently categorizing links into Clickbait, NSFW, or Other / Safe categories is essential to maintaining high quality scores and qualification standard levels.

$0.02 per task payment was immediately withrawable when $5 amount reached of accepted tasks. In a day I made almost 1000 KSh Total task earned > 45000 KSh

This guide breaks down key guidelines, provides example classification scenarios, and includes an interactive 5-question mock test to evaluate your accuracy.

1. Standard Category Definitions

Clickbait

  • Sensational Titles: Over-exaggerated claims or extreme hooks (e.g., "You won't believe what happened next!").
  • Information Gap: Intentionally withholding essential facts to force a click.
  • Content Disconnect: Headlines promising major reveals that lead to irrelevant or low-quality content.
  • Ad-Trap Layouts: Pages structured around excessive slideshows or aggressive pop-ups.

NSFW

  • Explicit Adult Content: Full nudity, sexually explicit material, or pornography.
  • Partial Nudity & Erotica: Suggestive imagery, uncovered explicit models, or erotic content.
  • Gore & Violence: Graphic depictions of blood, physical injury, severe harm, or violence.
  • Hate & Illegal Goods: Sites promoting illicit drug trading, weapons, or hate speech.

Other / Safe

  • Mainstream News: Factual reporting from established, neutral news portals.
  • E-Commerce & General Blogs: Normal shopping sites, technical blogs, or official portals.
  • Educational Content: Scientific journals, reference encyclopedias, and government portals.

Core Rules to Keep in Mind:

  1. Evaluate the Destination Page: Always base decisions on what loads on the landing page, not solely on the text of the initial URL string.
  2. Priority Hierarchy: NSFW always takes precedence over Clickbait. If a site features clickbait tactics but hosts explicit NSFW material, mark it as NSFW.
  3. Broken Links: If a URL displays a 404 error, domain expiration, or severe load error, refer to your specific platform guidelines for tags like "Page Not Loading" instead of guessing.

2. Classification Practice Scenarios

Scenario 1 • Headline & Disconnect

Headline: "She opened this 100-year-old box found in her attic, and what was inside left doctors speechless!"

Landing Page Behavior: Page opens with a 15-slide gallery containing dense banner ads. After clicking through 10 generic slides, the article mentions an old diary with no medical relevance.

Correct Label: Clickbait

Reasoning: Uses an exaggerated emotional hook, creates a deliberate information gap, and employs an ad-trap layout to maximize ad impressions.

Scenario 2 • Standard News Reporting

Headline: "Local authorities investigate incident at city center park."

Landing Page Behavior: A standard news website reporting on a local police investigation with factual descriptions and standard news banner ads.

Correct Label: Other / Safe

Reasoning: Standard factual reporting on sensitive events remains labeled as Safe unless graphic visual gore or sensationalized clickbait tactics are introduced.

Scenario 3 • Rule Priority Edge Case

Headline: "You won't believe what this celebrity wore on her beach vacation!"

Landing Page Behavior: Clicking through redirects to a site displaying uncensored paparazzi photos featuring explicit nude imagery.

Correct Label: NSFW

Reasoning: Though the headline uses clickbait phrasing, NSFW safety risks take immediate priority over clickbait labels.

3. Practice Quiz (5 Questions)

Test your knowledge with these practical scenarios. Select your answers below and click Check My Score to receive feedback.

1. Headline: "Drink this one kitchen spice before bed to dissolve all stomach fat overnight!"

Destination: A blog page making medical claims without scientific citations, filled with affiliate links to purchase supplement pills.

2. Headline: "2026 High Fashion Runway Highlights & Swimwear Collections"

Destination: A major fashion magazine site featuring models wearing artistic, non-explicit beachwear on a runway.

3. Headline: "Top 10 Unbelievable Movie Mistakes That Escaped Editing!"

Destination: A clean 10-item listicle with clear screenshots and detailed explanations of movie errors, with minimal, non-intrusive ads.

4. Headline: "Shocking footage from downtown traffic collision caught on camera"

Destination: A forum page containing uncensored, highly graphic videos showing fatal injuries and severe blood without warning.

5. Headline: "His response to the interviewer's question left everyone speechless!"

Destination: A page displaying a short video clip of a standard celebrity interview where the response is entirely ordinary.

3rd Place at the BAKE Blogger Awards: Thank You for the Support!

3rd Place at the BAKE Blogger Awards: Thank You for the Support!

I’m proud to share a milestone from my blogging journey: I finished 3rd in the latest BAKE Blogger Awards, in a category that also included vlog-related content.

#BAKEAwards #Blogging #Vlogging #ContentCreation #Kenya
Achievement Summary: Podium Finish → 3rd Place Recognition → Dual Blog/Vlog Category → Community Supported.

This was my second time participating in the BAKE Awards, and reaching the podium again is something I genuinely appreciate. Most importantly, thank you to everyone who viewed my content, voted, shared my posts, encouraged me, and followed my journey. Your support made this achievement possible.

πŸ₯‰ Third Place — A Result I’m Proud Of

Coming third is not simply about the position on a leaderboard. For me, it represents the work that goes into consistently creating, publishing, and improving content.

I entered the awards to put my work forward, learn from other creators, and see how my content would perform alongside other participants. And this time, the result was 3rd place. That gives me even more motivation to keep improving.

πŸ“ Blog vs πŸŽ₯ Vlog: They Are Not the Same

Both blogging and vlogging are legitimate forms of digital content creation, but they require different skills, workflows, and production standards.

Blogging Vlogging
Primarily written content Primarily video content
Relies on articles, research and written storytelling Relies on filming, narration and visual storytelling
SEO and search visibility can be important Video retention, watch time and engagement can be important
Requires writing, editing and formatting Requires filming, editing, audio and visual production
Can remain useful as an evergreen article Often depends heavily on video presentation
Usually consumed by reading Usually consumed by watching

That distinction matters when comparing creators across formats.

⚖ Different Formats, Different Policies

Blogging and vlogging can also be governed by different platform and competition requirements.

A written blog may be assessed around:

  • Originality and quality of writing
  • Research and accuracy
  • Presentation and formatting
  • Consistency
  • Audience engagement
  • SEO and discoverability
  • Compliance with competition rules

Vlogging can involve additional considerations such as:

  • Video originality
  • Production and audio quality
  • Editing and visual storytelling
  • Copyrighted music and footage
  • Viewer retention and video engagement
  • Platform-specific rules

Therefore, a blog and a vlog should not automatically be judged as though they are identical forms of content.

πŸŽ₯ A Respectful Observation About the Vlog Results

I also want to be honest about something. Looking at the vlog winner’s publicly available content, I personally felt that the amount of content and the level of production did not meet the professional standard I would have expected from a winning entry.

Perspective: That is my personal assessment, not an accusation against the creator. Winning an award does not necessarily mean that every viewer will agree with the judging outcome.

Rather than attacking another creator, I believe the better conversation is:

Key Question: What exactly should define excellence in blogging and vlogging awards? Should it be popularity, technical quality, originality, consistency, audience engagement—or clearly separated standards for different content formats?

πŸ™ Thank You to My Viewers and Voters

To everyone who supported me: thank you. Every view, vote, comment, share, and message of encouragement mattered.

This was my second BAKE Awards participation, and finishing third gives me another chapter in my content-creation journey. I don’t see 3rd place as the end—I see it as a benchmark.

πŸ† 3rd Place Today. Better Content Tomorrow.

Next time, the goal is to improve the content, raise the production standard, and compete for an even higher position. Keep reading. Keep creating. Keep improving. πŸ‡°πŸ‡ͺ

Note: This post reflects my personal experience and opinion about content quality and award outcomes. It is not intended to misrepresent the official BAKE judging criteria or diminish another creator’s achievement.
